Mill Creek is one of about 1,000 Unitarian Universalist congregations in the United States and Canada. Unitarianism dates back to the Reformation, when our forebears questioned the orthodox Trinity. Believing in the oneness of God, rather than the traditional Trinity, they adopted the term "Unitarians." Since then, Unitarians in Europe and America have continued to explore new religious thinking. Belief in universal salvation for all led to the 18th-century birth of Universalism in Great Britain. Universalism has evolved away from concepts of heaven and hell, but maintains its original sense that everyone is worthy of finding meaning and love. In 1961, the two denominations merged to create Unitarian Universalism. Our combined traditions have led to a dynamic faith that continues to expand into an ever-widening circle, welcoming new ideas, questions, participation, and social responsibility, while affirming self-worth and caring for others. A brief history of Unitarian Universalism can be found here. |
