January 29: Defiantly Hopeful

Join us this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. when we welcome back Debbie Cole who will bring us her message, “Defiantly Hopeful.”

We cannot control how everything in life turns out and certainly the last few months have made that clear. However, we CAN control how we react and how we tell our stories. What we do matters. How we live inspires. Hope is embracing the possibilities of the future as not written yet…. May we be the ones we have been waiting for.

Come join us in exploring hope (as well as “doing” hope) in the many possible futures ahead of us! Our music will be performed by the Mill Creek Choir under the direction of Kristen Tosh-Morelli.

Children’s Religious Education

We welcome and look forward to children coming to Classroom One on Sunday after Debbie Cole’s Story! This Sunday the children will be decorating our Blue Bird houses, and we will be outside if the weather allows. Otherwise, it’s party time!

Adult Religious Education

This Sunday features a video by Robert Jensen, author of The Heart of Whiteness. Jensen argues that — even decades after the significant achievements of the civil-rights movement and with an African-American president — it is still appropriate to describe the United States as a white-supremacist society, in terms of how we think and how we live.

Through an analysis of contemporary racial ideology, Jensen presents a framework for critiquing the naturalizing of power and privilege in other arenas of our lives (gender, class, nationality, and ecology). How have we come to accept so easily systems of domination and subordination? How did we become resigned to hierarchy? How can we challenge the unjust and unsustainable nature of the systems in which we live?

It’s going to be another great day at Mill Creek!
