Volunteer Highlight: Jeanne Hanson

We are so proud of our wonderful RE volunteers! Their expertise, energy and enthusiasm are the lifeblood of our programs. Today, we highlight volunteer Jeanne Hanson, who along with her husband, Brian, teaches our Middle School aged youth, including the Coming of Age program and the OWL program (Our Whole Lives comprehensive sexuality education). She took the time to let us get to know her a little better. Here’s what she had to share:

Where are you from?
Wilmington DE

Many of us would run from the thought of teaching Middle School aged kids, especially with topics like sexuality (OWL) and spirituality/religion (COA), but you have been doing this for quite a few years. What keeps you coming back?
The kids. I love getting to know them. They are such wonderful kids. I love being part of their growing up, and I love the challenge. I like being a part of the RE program.

What brings you to Mill Creek?
Mill Creek helps me remember what is important in life, and I enjoy the people very much. I like being part of a community that cares about the same things I care about. I enjoy singing in the choir. And, of course, I love the kids.

What do you love most about Religious Exploration at Mill Creek?
As a life-long UU, I love being with kids who are growing up with the same values that I hold dear, and I generally really like kids in general.

Anything interesting you’d like us to know about you?
Since I retired, I expanded my teaching “career” to include teaching Spanish at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, as well as English to a Venezuelan couple through Literacy Delaware. I find that teaching is a meaningful way to connect to people. It is beneficial to everyone including the teacher. Also, I just like to be useful.

Thanks so much, Jeanne! We are so lucky to have you and Brian to help guide our youth!
