** Don’t Take the Bait: How to Avoid Phishing Scams
————————————————————

Phishing scams tend to ramp up during any holiday time – and tax time – and anyone can fall victim.

Phishing is a type of cybercrime that uses deceptive electronic communications, such as emails, text messages, or phone calls, to trick individuals into revealing sensitive personal or financial information, which can lead to identity theft and monetary loss.

Phishing scams have evolved over a relatively short period of time and have gotten very sophisticated. The common types of phishing scams include email phishing (the most common type, involving emails that appear to be from legitimate organizations like banks, retailers, or government agencies); spear phishing (directed at a specific individual or organization using personalized info gleaned from social media); whaling (a type of spear phishing that targets high-profile CEOs or CFOs to gain access to corporate information); vishing (the use of fraudulent phone calls or voice mail messages which can include caller ID spoofing); smishing (the use of deceptive text messages impersonating shipping companies, banks, or utility providers); and quishing (QR code phishing using malicious codes embedded in emails or placed in public areas that direct users to fake websites).

To learn more about phishing scams — how to recognize and avoid them — click the ‘learn more here’ button below to access the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Advice website – a comprehensive, free government resource designed to help people avoid scams, manage money, secure personal information, and report fraud. It offers information about what to do if you’ve responded to a phishing email, and how to report it.

As a reminder, emails from Rev. Christe will NEVER:
* Ask for money
* Ask for a ‘favor’
* Be ambiguous or ask for ‘assistance’
* Ask for help with an unclear ‘special project’
* Be vague or secretive in nature
* Ask for anything to be ‘handled discreetly’
* Ask for the church directory
* Be restrictive in asking that you limit contact to email only (i.e. ask for no phone calls)

All of Rev. Christe’s emails concerning church-related matters will come from revchriste@gmail.com. Any requests from Rev. Christe asking for resources will be made IN PERSON – and NEVER by email.

10:30 am
————————————————————
Honoring Women’s History Month, I want to dig up something that has been long buried.

I have been a history nerd my whole life. And the question that has haunted me longest is not what the story says — but what story is missing — who got left out, sealed away, declared unworthy?

This Sunday we’ll follow that question into scrolls left in the Egyptian desert and ask ourselves what it has to do with the truths we carry sealed inside ourselves — the voices we were told were too much, the stories we couldn’t speak aloud, the parts of us still waiting to be found.

Join us this Sunday for Rev. Christe Lunsford’s sermon – and come ready to dig. Come ready to be surprised by what was there all along.

Music for this service will be offered by Giovana Dixon.

The discussions, led by Tracey Crook, occur on the last Wednesday of March and April, and will last approximately 60-90 minutes.
