Conflict is part of daily life… but violence doesn’t have to be
The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) is an international volunteer program that offers conflict resolution workshops to transform lives. AVP started in prisons in the USA in 1975, and now also operates in communities, schools, colleges and conflict situations worldwide. In 1990, AVP was introduced into Delaware prisons and in 2012 was a recipient of the Governor’s State Volunteerism Award.
AVP experiential workshops use the shared experiences of participants, interactive exercises, games and role-plays to examine the ways in which we respond to situations where injustice, prejudice, frustration, and anger can lead to aggressive behavior and violence. It uses exercises focusing on:
- Affirmation – Building self esteem and trust
- Communication – Improving both listening skills and assertive methods of expression
- Cooperation – Developing cooperative attitudes that avoid competitive conflicts
- Creative Conflict Resolution – learn new and creative ways to respond to real conflicts in our lives.
