The UUSMC Book Group will meet next on Thursday, January 5 at 7:30 in the church library. Rachael VerNooy will lead a discussion of Annie’s Ghosts: A Journey Into a Family Secret by Steve Luxenberg (2009: ~400 pages).
This “gripping detective story and haunting memoir” follows Steve’s search for his mother’s “missing” sister. Steve’s mother had always said she was an only child, but late in life she told a doctor that she had a disabled sister. When Steve learned of his mother’s slip, he was mystified. If his mom had a sibling, why had her existence been resolutely concealed for decades? Following the trail took Steve to Depression-era Detroit and tsarist Russia, the Holocaust in Ukraine and the Philippine war zone.
“Steve Luxenberg sleuths his family’s hidden history with the skills of an investigative reporter, the instincts of a mystery writer, and the sympathy of a loving son. His rediscovery of one lost woman illuminates the shocking fate of thousands of Americans who disappeared just a generation ago” —Tony Horwitz.
At the end of the meeting, Amy White will present several book choices for the May 2017 meeting.
Looking ahead, on March 2, 2017 Rudy Nyhoff will lead the group discussion of Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson.
All are welcome to attend. If interested, please contact Book Group Coordinator Amy White (amywwhite@comcast.net; (302) 652-1952).
