The Newark branch of the CDNJC will be meeting in our sanctuary on Monday evening, June 19 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Kate Parker West of the Delaware Center for Justice (DCJ) will speak on pretrial detention and bail reform.
Delaware’s bail system is failing in two ways: we unnecessarily detain individuals who lack funds for their release, and on the other end of the spectrum, we release defendants who fail to appear or remain law abiding during their period of pretrial release.
DCJ believes that liberty should be the norm and that all individuals are innocent until proven guilty. DCJ is advocating for the passage of HB 204 which provides for the reduction of Delaware’s pretrial detention population through the use of data-driven, reliable risk assessments, as well as for improved pretrial practices statewide. UUDAN is supporting this important legislation.
Everyone is invited to attend this important meeting.
